Pluto Mills Reimagining Mechanochemistry

A new type of planetary ball mill, which can be used for routine material processing, both in academic and industrial labs. The grinding action of the balls, is used to reduce the particle size of the material, which in turn leads to better mixing and homogenization. Our innovation offers an inexpensive (£1-2k), solution which contains an active cooling system which should keep the temperature under control and allow milling sessions without the need of pausing them. Moreover, the design of our instrument allows faster mixing speeds compared to traditional planetary mills. Finally, our product is also significantly smaller and lighter compared to existing mills, and can hold up to 6 milling jars, versus 1 or 2 which is what the current commercial ball mills offer.

Our Innovation

Pluto Mills patented drive system for planetary ball mills allows for increased adaptability. The use of a belt and pulley system reduces maintenance and increases reliability while accommodating a wider range of milling power and scales. This is due to the pulley system being able to quickly change depending on application requirements. An example would be the transition from laboratory to commercial scales (10s of grams to kilograms per run). Usually this would require multiple machines and a lot of initial investment and overheads. Our drives system does not only allow this transition to occur within a single machine but also gives the ability to iterate it, giving a better perspective on how best optimize the scaling process.
